Arabic and English Signage in Bahrain: Reviewing the Artwork Before Production
A bilingual business sign has two jobs: identify the company clearly and make its message understandable in Arabic and English. Translating the name is only one part of the work. Both versions must fit the sign, remain readable from the intended distance and be approved before fabrication begins.
Approve the wording before the layout
Start with the exact trading name and the wording that will appear on the sign. Confirm Arabic spelling with someone authorised to approve it, and agree on a consistent English spelling. A literal translation may be unsuitable for a registered name. Keep telephone numbers and web addresses separate from the main name so that the designer can manage their direction and spacing. Record the approved wording in a shared document rather than exchanging different versions across messages.
Give each language a clear hierarchy
Arabic and Latin letters behave differently when scaled. Matching their point sizes does not necessarily create equal visual weight. Review the complete words at their intended physical size, including dots, short strokes and spaces. Agree which information is primary and which is secondary, then give both languages enough breathing room. Avoid stretching letters to fill a box or increasing Arabic letter spacing in ways that break connected forms.
Review materials and lighting together
Artwork that looks balanced on a screen may change when letters become illuminated or cut from a material. Ask the fabricator to review narrow strokes, small counters, fixing points and the intended lighting method. Consider how the sign will look during the day and after dark. Request a suitable sample when colour or finish is critical, and make clear whether a sample confirms material only or the complete construction.
Close the approval with an installation drawing
The final approval should include dimensions, materials, colours, wording and the agreed mounting arrangement. Record where the sign sits on the frontage and who checks site access, power and any required permissions. If information changes after approval, issue a revised file with a clear version number. This helps prevent an old proof being used during fabrication.
