Preparing a Café for Location Photography: Space, Light and Timing
A café photography session should show more than individual dishes. Seating, lighting and the route through the space help customers understand the atmosphere before they visit. Preparing the location gives the photographer a useful setting without misrepresenting how the café normally operates.
Decide what the photographs need to explain
List the views customers need: the entrance, main seating area, counter and any outdoor terrace. Connect each view to its intended use on the website or social channels. A wide atmosphere photograph and a close detail answer different questions. Confirm whether the session includes food, staff portraits or only the location so the team can prepare the right people and equipment.
Choose a time that suits the light and the operation
Visit or review the location before agreeing on the shooting window. Window light changes throughout the day, while decorative lighting may be more effective after sunset. Discuss reflections in glass and how mixed lighting affects colours. Arrange access around deliveries, cleaning and busy service periods. If customers may appear, agree how their privacy and any necessary permissions will be handled.
Prepare the space without making it look artificial
Clean visible surfaces, straighten chairs and remove temporary clutter. Check menu boards, table signs and branded items for outdated information. Keep the furniture arrangement representative of normal use. Avoid adding props that imply unavailable products or facilities. Prepare outdoor areas too, including cushions, planters and the path to the entrance, while keeping access routes clear.
Review framing and delivery before finishing
Check a representative image on site for distracting objects, reflections and cropping. Leave room for website headings when a banner needs it, and request suitable vertical compositions for mobile use. Confirm file naming, editing scope and usage rights with the photographer. Retain a record of the selected views so later shoots can update changed areas rather than repeat the entire session.
