Retail Interior Finishing: Building a Clear Handover Snag List
A handover walk-through is most useful when observations become a clear, agreed record. For retail interior finishing, a snag list helps the business and project team distinguish visible finish issues, incomplete items and matters that need a specialist’s review. It should be specific enough for someone to locate each issue and confirm when it has been addressed.
Organise the review by location
Divide the premises into identifiable zones such as entrance, customer area, counter and back-of-house. Use the same names on drawings and in the snag list. Review agreed finishes against the specification and approved samples where available. Record the review date and who attended. Work through one zone at a time so small details are not overlooked while the team moves between unrelated areas.
Describe what can be observed
Give each item a reference number, exact location and a short description. Photograph it with enough context to locate it, then add a closer view if needed. For example, describe a visible gap beside a particular panel rather than writing “wall not good.” Do not diagnose concealed construction or electrical problems from appearances. Mark those observations for assessment by the relevant qualified contractor.
Agree responsibility and a follow-up route
Separate cosmetic corrections from unfinished work and questions that need investigation. Agree the responsible party and a realistic follow-up arrangement for each item. If an observation raises a safety concern, refer it promptly to the responsible professional and follow the project’s access controls. The snag list supports coordination; it does not replace technical inspection, commissioning or any required acceptance procedure.
Close items with evidence and keep handover records
Revisit corrected items and record the outcome, rather than removing them as soon as work is promised. Keep dated photographs or written confirmation where useful. Collect finish references, care instructions and relevant contractor contacts with the final handover pack. Discuss how new observations after opening will be reported. An organised record helps later maintenance and prevents uncertainty over which changes were agreed.
