Print-Ready Artwork: A Practical Checklist Before Production

A good design can still produce disappointing results if the file does not match the printing specification. Preparing artwork correctly reduces avoidable revisions and helps keep production aligned with the approved design.

Confirm the supplier’s specification

Ask for the required size, file format, colour setup and finishing instructions before exporting. Bleed and safe margins depend on the job, so follow the specification provided for that item. Keep essential wording away from cut lines and folds, and check that small text remains readable at the actual output size.

Check content as carefully as design

Telephone numbers, prices, email addresses and spelling should be checked by the person responsible for the business information. Open QR codes and test website links. Review both sides of a printed item and compare the proof with the approved content. A production proof is also the final opportunity to catch an outdated logo or missing detail.

Manage versions and approvals

Name the final file clearly and avoid sending several competing versions without explanation. Provide supporting assets when requested and retain an editable copy for later updates. Ask whether a physical sample or final proof is appropriate for the job. Production should begin from an identifiable approved version, not from an informal screenshot.

Before you request a quotation

  • Correct finished size
  • Readable text and suitable image quality
  • Verified contact details and links
  • One clearly approved artwork version
